Erith successfully secured the enabling works package at the former HMRC office building in Llanishen, Cardiff. The comprehensive project encompassed the soft strip, asbestos removal and the demolition of various low-rise structures across the site and the high-reach demolition of the 16 storey office block and 11 storey Gleider House.

Asbestos surveys identified asbestos containing materials throughout the site. Leveraging our in-house licensed asbestos removal department, we self-executed the abatement, eliminating the need for subcontracting and ensuring seamless integration with the demolition timeline.

The sequence of works was meticulously planned to take in to the account the durations of asbestos removal, along with the critical path milestones for the demolition processes. Early demolition of the low-rise buildings facilitated the creation of the crushed material platform required for the high-reach excavator operations.

A proactive communications strategy was implemented to inform local residents and businesses of the project’s progress and any potential disruption. Regular updates were provided to surrounding premises outlining dates for certain types of work (i.e. breaking, crushing etc), and contained 24-hour contact information to foster transparency and community trust.

Our commitment to community involvement extended to educational initiatives, inviting local schools for site visits and discussions about career opportunities in demolition. We also arranged for presentations to be given in local schools about the project, site safety, sustainability, and career opportunities in the industry. These efforts were complemented by hiring local individuals from NEET backgrounds and contributing to the Cardiff Foodbank, reinforcing our social responsibility.

In line with our group objectives and targets to reduce our impact on the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, sustainable initiatives used on the project included solar powered generators to power the welfare area and salvage of scrap materials.

Throughout the project, rigorous monitoring of noise, dust and vibration ensured compliance with environmental and health and safety standards. Our ongoing commitment to these practices underscores our dedication to operational excellence and community well-being.
